GIF - Graphics Interchange Format

With JPEG, one of the two most common file formats for graphic images on the World Wide Web; GIF does lossless compression, but not as well as the newer open PNG format.


GSM - Global System for Mobile Communications

GSM was pioneered in Finland in 1991 as a European standard for a digital cellular telephone network, to support cross-border roaming; allows multiple calls and messeges on the same frequency; mostly used for text and voice. GSM is now the world’s major digital wireless standard; uses the TDMA air interface; can be implemented in 900 MHz, 1800 MHz or 1900 MHz frequency bands.

GPRS - GSM General Packet Radio Service

A mobile data transmission technique that transmits and receives data in packets; transfers data at rates from 56 up to 114 kbit/s, 12 times faster than the older GSM band; used for BlackBerry e-mail, web browsing and TCP communication. Used in second generation (2G) and also third generation (3G) devices. 2G cellular systems combined with GPRS are often described as "2.5G", that is, a technology between the second (2G) and third (3G) generations of mobile telephony.


GPS - Global Positioning System

GPS analyzes signals from a number of stationary satellites to allows users with wireless devices to determine their latitude, longitude and altitude from anywhere in the world.
