  • 1988 - Rogers Cantel licenses the Mobitex digital network from Ericsson, to work with the new MobiLib Plus software libraries written by Mike Barnstijn and the team at RIM. David Neale, V-P new product development at Rogers Wireless, says that MobiLib Plus was the basis of all the early Mobitex technology.
  • 1988 - Wireless takes off as RIM begins working on wireless data-only applications. RIM becomes the first wireless data technology developer in North America and the first company outside Scandinavia to develop connectivity products for Mobitex wireless packet-switched data communications networks. The technology is mainly used for business communications, such as processing credit-card sales using wireless handhelds.
